Top Tips On Building A Dog Run At Home

Dog owners will understand that although it would be lovely to give our pet pooches free rein in the garden, this isn’t always practical if the garden is not fully secure or if we have to go out to work and therefore need to ensure the dog is kept in a secure place whilst we are out of the house.  One great solution is to build a dog run, which means that the dog has access to outside space, whilst being kept safe and secure in their designated area.

Building a dog run is not too difficult, at here at Weld Mesh we are able to supply the materials required such as dog run panels.  We can also provide some help and advice should you have any queries either before or during the build of your dog run.

The first thing to look at when building a dog run is the location.  It may be that you can use the wall of the house or an outbuilding as your fourth wall, in which case you will only need to use dog run panels for the other 3 walls.  A concrete surface for the floor is preferable as this is easy to clean, and if possible try to lay the floor so that it has a very slight slope as this will make cleaning the run much easier.

When choosing the panels for the dog run, you may want to consider using either half solid or full solid panels on one wall of the run, so as to help to provide some shelter and shade for the dog.  The solid panels can also be very useful if the panel faces onto public ground as it may deter the dog from barking at other dogs or cats!

The bigger the dog run the better, and if you are able to choose a rectangular shaped run this will give the dog more space to run up and down than a square shape.  If your dog is going to spend a lot of time in the run or if you have more than one dog, then ideally you should go for a dog run which is at least 6ft by 24ft.  You may choose to place your dog run partly over a grassed area, as some dogs will prefer to use the grass as their toilet area.

Although dog runs provide an ideal solution for those dog owners who work or have limited roaming space in their house, it’s still important to exercise the dog on a regular basis in order to keep the pooch fit and healthy.
